The sony i mentioned later can be found in the following URI:http://www.sonystyle.co.nz/shop_deta...p;sku=VGNS48GP
Video card: not quite sure about this, sony got ATI6200 (128MB), 15' PB got ATI9700(64MB), do u guys know which is better?>>>>>> do not know
Max Ram support: both 2GB.
CPU:1.5G(PB) vs 2.0G(sony)>>>>>sony win
FSB:167 vs 533 >>>>>sony win
Optical drive: PB combo, sony DVD+-RW Drive (supports DVD+R double layer disc)>>>>sony win
Price(new zealand dollar): PB $3750, sony $3699.95($3700)
Hard disk: both 5400rmp, But PB 15' is 80 GB, sony only got 60GB, However, sony use Serial ATA, PB is ATA, IMO, SATA is better than ATA, right?not sure, so u guys help me about this one, which is better.
DISPLAY: PB got larger screen 15', sony only have 13.3', both wide screen, however, sony got Clear Bright LCD. can not say which is better, help me about this as well, thx.
wireless: PB has the standard named 802.11b, but sony got Integrated Wireless LAN IEEE 802.11b/g, are they same?which is better?
And i think from the perspective of keyboard, appearance, PB win.
And the other major thing is sony use CPee, but PB use tiger, PB win lot.
And the software that come with PB (ilife, etc) are much better than sony, so PB win.
However, the following thing is the most thing i am concern, although the software come with sony is lot worse than PB, then as i need the PB for school, and we need use J2EE, PHP, do you think mac platform is a suit for this kind of web stuff?
Does Xcode support J2EE,Or PHP? Can someone give me some good editor can handle the thing i mentioned above nicely.
soory for the long post, thanks in advance.

There were once four people named Everybody, Somebody, Nobody and Anybody. Somebody had to do a job, but Nobody wanted to do it. Nobody could see that Anybody could do it, and Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job. Nobody ended up doing it, and it so happened that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

if the PB is the new generation, it's got 802.11b/g integrated (for the last couple revisions) and bluetooth 2.0. i'm not sure if Xcode supports J2EE or PHP, but even if it does not; you can find an editor that does. isn't J2EE java (Xcode does support java for sure).

i would say go with the PB, unless there is something that you specifically need Windows ('doze) for...but alot of the web development, the coding part, you should be able to move back and forth between your PB and school. i move my c++/c# stuff between my mac at home and the PC's at school and just work on the code portion if it is GUI based. the java stuff i have to move back and forth goes through fine on both machines.

The 15" is also available at 1.67 GHz with a SuperDrive to support DVD+-R/RW
SATA is faster than ATA
The PB screen I like. Make a good profile and the color and brightness setup right, and it's a good screen.
802.11g is integrated. Antenna is built into the screen of the PB
The PB has backlit keyboard, very cool.
The Sony has an Nvidia 6200, not Ati. The video RAM is shared, so it seems the 6200 has 32 vram and 96 shared.
The HD in the Sony seems to be pre-partitioned into C:15 GB and D:45 GB...
The PB has DVI & S-Video out, Sony has VGA out, I don't see an S-Video...

And the decisive element : OS X Tiger and iApps ... vs XP and some 01100100011 they call software...

The PB's have a better resale value on the long run. They have a sleek design. The Sony is plastic

SATA is faster the ATA mostly when you have two hard drives. I think the actual speed difference will be negligable in a laptop configuration. That is I don't think the hard drives will attain speed that will show the SATA to be superior.

A couple of other things you want to consider on the sony vs. PB debate. While unfortunitly sony is faster in cpu and fsb, its running windows. OSX looks better,is more object oriented (not a hacked up version that windows is) and OSX does not have the issues with viruses/trojans and spyware.

The final thing you need to determine is whether the PB can run the software that you need. The version of JAVA and other languages. I myself cannot answer that and apart from that question the PB is a better computer.

Being a owner of a PB, I of course recommended it. Not knowing anything about programming, I can't help with that. Sitting here, with a friend who knows a Sony laptop, he is not pleased with it. He complains, mostly about Windows than anything else. Secondly, he complains the screen is too small, and he feels for the price, he could have made better choice. He finds the quality of my PB significantly higher than his, including slot loading drive verses tray, and comfort of keyboard, to mention a few. Of course, he feels OSX is far superior of an OS.

First off you don't need Xcode to write PHP you can write PHP with a simple text editor or if you want to get fancy BBEdit, secondly both of the most popular Java IDE's have been ported to OS X Eclipse and Netbeans.
2.66Ghz Mac Pro 2GM Ram 160Gig HD Ati X1900XT, 24" Dell 2407WFP
13.3" Mac Book Core Duo 2GIG Ram 80Gig HD
12" PowerBook 1.5Ghz 1.25GB Ram 60Gig HD
12" iBook 600Mhz (Late 2001) 640MB Ram 30Gig HD
