There were once four people named Everybody, Somebody, Nobody and Anybody. Somebody had to do a job, but Nobody wanted to do it. Nobody could see that Anybody could do it, and Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody's job. Nobody ended up doing it, and it so happened that Everybody blamed Somebody when Nobody did what Anybody could have done.

The first thing you should do with the new battery is run it down completely (use the computer past all the low-power warnings until it sleeps), then fully charge the battery. This calibrates the battery for optimal use.
You should get a green light after you've left the computer plugged in for a while.

The battery will only start charging if it drops bellow 95% , so sometimes the light will be yellow and the battery won't be 100%, which is normal. Once the battery goes bellow 95% it will start charging and go all the way up to 100%, during which the light will be orange, indicating it is charging. Once it is done at 100% it will turn yellow, indicating it is done charging. The yellow light will always be on when the PB in connected and fully charged.
Sometimes it will go from orange to yellow, or vice versa, for no reason. I wouldn't worry about it. I've seen this happen a couple of times as well.

Green when fully charged. Amber (yellow, orange) while charging.
