Hello all, I wish to run Maya on my PB as having a modeling app is always a fun thing to have on a laptop. Only problem is that I have a tendency... to not pay for professional apps (expensive tools ). I'm having pretty much an impossible time of finding a recent version of Maya for Mac for "free" and I'm assuming that requesting illegal software is not allowed on a forum like this so I'm not gonna bother to ask. My solution is to run the PC version of Maya through VPC but I'm well aware of the performance hit that is taken when running anything through an emulator. I have a 15" rev. D PB with a 1.67ghz cpu, 1 GB of ram, and 256mb vram. Is Maya runnable through VPC on such a platform? Runnable at decent performance I mean. I get the feeling that running Maya on a G4 is bad enough, I hope running it through a PC emulator won't finish it off. Remember, I'm not requesting any warez from you ppl, just want to know if the PB's hardware is sturdy enough to handle such a feat. Thanks.

Well, if you only want to play around with maya, nothing too crazy, get the Learners Edition off of their website, there is a mac version for free...
As you seem to not mind about piracy, you could always take the illegal route and find someone who has a full mac version and grab that.
As for performance with VPC... I would have to guess it is very shaky. VPC on my 12" Powerbook barely runs anything of value, and programs like Maya certainly aren't "basic apps"
I say try it out, if you don't like the results, get the free learners edition for the mac. If it is significantly faster (it will be) try to buy or obtain a copy of a true version for mac. Running programs MEANT to be ran on a mac is ALWAYS a better option. Good luck.

256MB VRAM in a Powerbook huh?
Anyway...running Maya through VPC on a Powerbook....hmmmmmm good luck. I wouldn't even touch that on my Dual 2.5 Power Mac with 3GB RAM and a 6800 ultra.

Well I finally found a working torrent for Maya, so problem solved. Thanks anyways for the help. And Jesus freaking Christ, I realized it would be expensive for the retail, but I just checked the price. $6999?! I'm sorry, no way in hell I would ever touch that. Might as well get buy a some new computers for that price.

you can forget maya+vpc, vpc is slow enough on powerbooks as one user suggested just download the Mac education version for free from their website.

Even a maxed out G5 wouldn't be tough enough to run Maya through VPC
