If you had the choice (given each cost about the same and that's all you had to spend), would you buy
A: an awesome 12' PB
or
B: an alright iBook with accessories like wireless mouse, keyboard, and new iPod
Maybe I'm overanalyzing the situation

There's not much difference between the iBook and PowerBook these days. I'd go with the iBook with more ram and the accessories. Now, an iBook or a PB 15 or 17 and I'd opt for the PB.

The feature I love on the PB that I don't think is on the iBook yet is that the display out acts as a second display. It's fantastic for powerpoints and that sort of thing.
But that could be on iBook too now, I'm not sure.
One thing that's not so great about the PB...that shell dents really easily.

There is a hack that lets you do screen spanning with the iBook, so don't make that sway your decision too much.

The PowerBook is faster, lighter, physically more compact, has a better kb, a bigger HD (without doing BTO), and has a DVI out (with monitor spanning ... yes there's a hack for the iBook). That said, none of these features is "killer", and the iBook does seem more rubust (not that the 12"PB is bad, if you're remotely careful). People downplay the differences between the two ... play with them side-by-side for 30 mins to see if the differences matter to you. I'd get the PBook, no question, but budget isn't so critical for me.

My Girlfriend bought an refurbished 12" PB and she's totally happy with it. She a TV producer and the lightness and compactness of the PB is perfect for her. She can even work on the set. I personnaly think that the PBs are more sturdy than the iBooks. One of my friend has a iBook and the plastic case makes cracking noises when you pick it up; it just feels cheaper. There is build quality difference. my 2 cents.

I'm about ready to jump through the ceiling... I'm tired of waiting for these "rumored" iBook updates, but I feel as those I should wait as long as possible. If they don't update, I'll probably go with a PB. Hopefully the iBooks either drop in price or Apple will make up some great new back-to-school deal.

I got the 12" PB recently and I love it.
The PB is pretty light, functional and beautiful. It has slightly better specs than the iBook but personally, the form factor plus the keyboard and trackpad were reasons enough for me to opt for the PB.
The iBook represents a stellar value but physically try each if possible. Try typing on the keyboard, using the trackpad and comparing the exteriors and I think you'll find the PB will tug at your heartstrings a bit more. Who knows, you might like the the iBook more but for me, I went for the PB.
