ibook spacebar not working

	Hi I'm running (well my wife is)Panther on a 366 ibook clamshell and my wife who is in Europe and is trying to communicate with me using yahoo messenger is having a hell of a time cos the space bar stopped working and the text coming to me looks like Indonesian. Is there a work around in syst prefs here. Does anyone know how to do it. I have another 5 weeks of this. I tried installing skype which is great but the day my wife was leaving a realized there is no microphone in the ibook.
