I can't understand what your problem is.
Is the battery new? Or did you buy some old pismo with an old (dead) battery.

Reset the PMU: shut down, pop out the battery, disconnect the AC power, and hold down, ONE time only, for a duration of 5 seconds, the small button (with a triangle logo next to it) that is next to the modem jack.

I'm 100% sure that if you just bought a used Pismo that is 5 years old, your battery will no longer hold a charge by now. I have had my Pismo for 5 years, and my original battery was dead ages ago. A second battery I had bought from Apple in 2002 now only holds 1.5 hours.
I recommend getting a Newer Tech Extended battery (7200mAh) from Macsales.com. I just ordered one before I left for JavaOne and it showed up the very next day. It has been lasting 6 hours on a full charge after I followed the directions that came in the box with the new battery.

You're right! I still own a couple of Pismo 500 with original batteries that keep at least a
90 min. charge!

I already told you what to buy.
Just start with the battery, because you need it for sure.
Worry about the smaller battery later.

Absolutely. I got my Pismo 2 weeks after the Pismo came out, and got a second battery at the same time. Each one of them still gives me about 90 minutes of use -- the same as the 1.5 year old batteries on my AlBook. In fact, the Pismo might even give me more time...
Sorry, Kristoff, but it is absolutely not a given that the battery is dead.

You could probably find cheaper ones than the NewerTech ones, but they are worth the money. They'll give you significantly better battery life which means that even when they start to go bad you'll be able to keep using them for longer.

I just re-read all your posts.
Inspect the contacts on the battery to make sure none of them are damaged, dirty, or corroded.
You could also very carefully clean each one with isopropyl alcohol. Use extreme caution when doing this.
Only clean with a small amount on a Q-tip one contact at a time. You do not want to short the contacts or the battery could get dangerously hot and even explode.
Examine the contacts inside the computer (will be hard to see) for any obvious physical damage or obstructions.
Make sure the battery is firmly seated all the way in.
Charge the battery as best you can.
Then unplug the AC and look at the "Battery Capacity" graph and list the value next to "present".
Keep XBattery running with all graphs open.
Then, let it run on battery until it dies.
Then, plug it in.
Capture each graph, and post them here.
What you are looking for is a sudden drop off. This indicates that at least one of the cells is history.
If you see a nice linear graph, then the cells are ok, but might be reduced in capacity.

I've got both of my original batteries, and I get 5+ hours out of them together. Granted, I haven't used them as much as I could have, but they still work great.
