When Apple says that the current iBooks have "one available expansion slot", does that mean that there are two memory slots (one with the 256MB chip that Apple offers and an additional one for extra RAM)? I'm thinking about purchasing one for my daughter and I obviously want to add considerable more RAM than the 256MB it comes with.

So. . . one slot or two?

They only have one available expansion slot. The stock 256 is permanent.

So I can add an additional RAM module, but I cannot replace the stock 256? Is that correct?

yes that is correct. the 256mb is soldered on, leaving only one available slot to add additional memeory.

how much memory are you thinking about adding? i just bought a used ibook and it came with 256mb, i had another stick of 256mb from my old windows laptop, so i put it in and it runs great. there have only been a few times where i have gotten the beachball. so depending on what your daughter is going to be using it for you can probably save some money if you want and just use lower sized memory. then again you can max it out to 1.25gb.

From what I have seen with my own ibook and from people here the sweet spot is to add a 512 chip. Its the best price / performance value you will find.
