Hello--

I just got a new powerbook 1gz. It came with Jaguar but I upgraded to the latest edition of Panther. I’m not ready for Tiger.

Funny things have been happening. I tried running software update and it kept crashing when I tried to instal Quicktime. Then I tried to open Quicktime and everytime I do, it crashes.

Also when I use Safari it keeps crashing as well. If I go to apple.com and click on quicktime tab it will crash.

When I restart my computer an error box comes up that says the date was set to a year before a certain date (it keeps changing).

I don’t know what’s going on.

I tired to reinstall my computer. I wiped the hard drive (zero it out with the install CD). I tried to reinstall the software using the powerbook, but it just wouldn’t work.

I had to use my iMac and put my powerbook in firewire target mode to install the CD. It work. I install 10.3.2 on my computer.

But when I just turned it on, again it had the error with the date even though I just set it in the welcome window.

I tried to run software update and it didn’t work. Finally after the 3rd try, it worked. I tried to download the 10.3.9 update, but it wouldn’t work. It started, but gave me some error message and a nice red sign telling me the update wasn’t completed.

What could be causing this?

I ran a harddrive test via the CD and everything passed on both the quick and extended tests.

I’ve only had the computer for a week, but it worked okay the few times I used it. I just did get a 1gb stick of RAM. Could this be the what is causing this? The first time I tried to put it in, it wouldn’t work. I had to go back to the store to get a replacement. They told me that stick was bad. So this stick works, but maybe it’s so poor, it is messing up the computer. Could that be it?

I just don’t know enough if it’s a software, hardware or memory problem.

I’ve only had the computer a week. I live in NYC so I guess I can just bring it into one of the genius at the bar, but maybe a genius here knows. Thanks.

remove the 1GB stick and see if it works better.

Defective RAM can do really weird voodoo **** with your machine.

However, I've never heard of bad RAM resetting the date & time - that's usually a motherboard problem IME.

I tried to install the mac OS. 10.3.9 update again and again it didn't work. I tried it once through software update and then through apple's website.

I restarted my computer and the computer can't get past the blue/purple screen wit the apple in the middle and a wheel that's thinking, but it doesn't go anywhere.

I just took out the 1gb stick of ram and restarted my computer. It's still stuck. I can't even get back to the OS now.

This is really starting to make me angry. I don't know what to do.

Should I call apple? Go to the apple store? Go to Tekserve?

I think I'm starting to smell lemons. This is a used machine, right? I'd try going back to where you got it. Hopefully you have a warranty of some kind.

It's an apple refurbished machine. So yes it has a ONE YEAR WARRANTY.
