You can't use a disk from another Mac. You need a retail version or an Ibook Tiger cd.

...and for the hundred-billionth time - even if you were able to install from the iMac cd, that is a violation of the license agreement....take a few minutes sometime and read it.
getting a copy of the operating system with another computer does *not* give you the right to install it wherever you please.

seanc, that is odd, I did install the 10.3.8 (or something like that) that came with my iBook on my dual 500...
Mr. Blur, I read the "read before you install" text and they do not talk about any specific harware.
I take the right to updete ALL my computers when I buy a new machine and that it comes with a new OS.
I am an Apple buyer/user for 20 years now so give me a breack on licence OK. When you give so much $ to one company, I believe that it is fair to behave like I do.
Please, do not tell me that you have a pure soul!
Plus you did not really help regarding my topic...
... well, enough now.

I have two Macs and two copies of Tiger. I bought the retail version for my PowerBook then forked out the $18 for the upgrade Tiger disc on my mini.

Zubro - I have 3 computers - I purchase the Family Pack license. We have heard your "argument" a thousand times before and it is WRONG.

OK, I am wrong.
So I want to be able to buy a Mac without the OS.
What do you say about that?

Who's Holly? Do you mean Holy?
And the first two posters answered the original question.
Why don't you get off your high horse and stop telling us to preach? And you can answer the OP's question as well.

As far as I understand it, ever since Tiger was released copies of Tiger that ship with Macs (OEM copies) can...
a). Only legally be installed on the computer they shipped with
b). Only physically be installed on a machine of the same type (i.e iBook / iMac / Powerbook / Powermac etc.) So even if you didn't care about the license agreement, you could only install your OEM copy on a machine of the same type.
I don't remember this being the case with Panther, but it may have been.
As far as the moral argument goes, anything that breaks the license agreement is technically theft as far as I am concerned. When I worked in a games store, we once caught this guy writing down the CD keys of loads of PC games from the boxes on the shelf. We confiscated his notes and told him it was theft. He said he had the right to do it because he spends so much money in the store and that he was a regular customer. Where's the sense in that?
I would've thought a long-time customer would get MORE loyal, not LESS. But no offence, I'm not judging anyone.

I agree with you.
My "I paid my share" point was/is not an excuse.
It was a bad habit. No bad thoughts behind it anyway.
If I now buy a new Mac, I still think that I could have the option not to have the OS so I could buy a familly pack myself and update when I need.
You know, just to be flexible, and honest.
