Hello y'all
My brandnew Powerbook g4 17inch has a big screen and and a big problem connecting to internet with the internal Apple 56k v92 modem. Communications start ok with the internet supplier... then I just hear the other end hang up. After three or four tries, connection is made. My older Pismo just connects so easily... but the new pb sends and receives alll these echo sounds, twirps, dzings, beeps, burps, glarps... and then nothing.
Can someone help please ?
Thank you very much !
Ray

I can only assume that your Pismo is not using OS X, because the first thing I'd do is match all the settings between the two machines. That being the case, there are many things to twiddle in your network preferences:

enable or disable error correction
send ppp echo packets
TCP header compression

These things on or off may make the difference.

What OS are you using? This was a known issue with some earlier versions of the OS -- the Pismo modems worked, but any modem on the titaniums or newer PBs would not work.

The newer OS updates fixed the problem for me, but I've heard knew Modem problems (that sound very similar) have cropped up again under Tiger.

Thanks for the info.
Here are some more details :
The Pismo is running Panther (very well I must say), and the 17" PB is on Tiger (préinstalled BTO). All the modem settings are the same on both machines. I also tried disabling error correction, ppp echo packets TCP header compression and so on.
One thing that is different is the modem itself. Pismo has an Apple Internal 56K (v.90) but the 17" has a v92. Could the v92 be the problem. At connection, the v92 takes about 10 - 15 seconds longer (when is does connect), but one time out of 3 our 4 times, I hear the other end hang up. Fustrating.
Maybe Tiger is the problem ?
If anyone know of a fix... please let me know.
Thanks ya'll

Ugh...I'd just get broadband and be done with it. You can try using the v.90 modem script, the same as the one on the Pismo. It's in the Network preferences under the Modem tab.

Thanks ibook_steve....Tried the v.90 script.... same problem... Yeah broadband would be great... have it at work but not available at home... exept for satellite which I had and dumped (bad service) .

Oh well, Thanks for the try. I'll wait and see with a Tiger update ? If not, I'll just retry 3 or 4 times to connect. It always does finaly connect.
Hum, I'll also try another service provider.... who knows.

This sure sounds like the older problem I experienced way back with 10.2. The newer modem scripts were problemmatic with connecting to some remote modems when using the newer Apple hardware.

Try a different recipient modem pool.

It could also be a hardware problem, my PB17 modem did indeed fail. Applecare has a script and a 1-800 test number they'll have you try after they have you do an archive and reinstall of the OS.

Archive and reinstall of the OS is not bad at all, it's one of the bonuses of the Mac OS.
