Sold my 12" powerbook 1.33ghz with 768 ram/ 60gig/combo. etc.

I was using my 3.3 ghz pc coupled to a Dell 2005fpw as my main computer and 12" mainly in the bed or as a portable. I found the 1024x768 completely unacceptable for usage on the 12". Speed wise, everything worked fine even when running games like WC3 or Wolfenstein. So the main gripe was the screen.

I decided I needed to unhook my pc because I was spending way too much time on it. I'm a Windows fan and was real comfortable with the OS. Had it all custom and everything worked perfectly for me. Never had problems with crashing or anything, just gotta make sure you keep things right on your own pc. Any probs I blame on the user.

So after tossin the 12" I went down to the bookstore and told em I wanted a 15" with combo. The guy working there told me they don't have any because they don't believe in combo drives, a comment which still has me chuckling for some reason. So I had a choice of either ordering and waiting or going home with a big black box with a superdrive inside. Wasn't much of a choice for my impatient self. Came home and opened the box up and set it up.

Size wise, its big, but not too big, but not too small, and then big again. So I'd classify it as just right. Resolution is better, multitasking is now possible. As far as lcd quality, no doubt the 15" crushes the 12". It's not worth it I don't think at all to buy the 12" powerbook with a screen of that quality.

Ram is only 512mb on the 15" and I can feel it slowing down when trying to have a couple of apps open, so a 1 gig increase should help but that superdrive cost me any upgrades anytime soon.

Haven't had a chance to burn anything with the drive so I have 135 in cash sitting there doing nothing. I'm interesting in burn speeds since a lot of people have mentioned they're not upto par.

Backlit keyboard is nice, real pretty lights always make me happy. Haven't played any games but overall computing is fun. I love windows, it works great for me. Mac is the same, everything is working. Problem now is I am spending all my time on the laptop, the main reason I unhooked my pc.

I'm thinking of doing the same (ditching my rev D 12" for a rev D 15"). My plan was to buy a 20" dell LCD for use at the desk... but the 12" fans drive me nuts and I've read that the fans will come on more with an external display (the graphics chip is by far the hottest thing in here). Had I known this before purchasing, I would have steered towards the 15" with superdrive. I think the 15" is a bit too big for me in terms of portability, but the low quality screen on the 12" is killing me. It's not the size or resolution, it's the quality (viewing angle, colors, brightness). The problem is money... I can't afford to buy the 15" upfront, then sell the 12"... and I don't want to be without my PB for long (it's my only computer at this moment). Besides, I'm not sure what I could get for it second hand. A six month old stock 12" with SD (I'd keep my 1GB SODIMM for the 15").

Thanks for your opinions. I was actually thinking about doing the OPPOSITE -- I had a rev C 15" PB that I sold off in March; I waited out, naively, for a dual core PB to be updated in June. Obviously, didn't happen.

Now, I'm thinking simply about getting a 12" PB for portability and a 20" Apple LCD for work at home, save some $$, and get a refurb G5 Dualie for the real stuff. What do you think? The 15"PB/20"LCD would be the ideal combo, but the local college bookstore is selling those 12" 1.5 combo's for only $1199. That's a heckuva deal. With no tax, that's $600 less, at minimum, to the 15" PB combo for $1799. Does the bigger screen justify that leap?

If its going to be your primary computer, 15" IMO is worth it over the 12". That was my decision to make this my main computer, use it for everything and if I go anywhere I'll have all my files and stuff with me as well. Obviously if going for just a portable, 12" would be nice. But even that I don't think is worth the price. The screen quality capped it off as a waste. I'd buy a dell 700m instead when it goes on a deal for around 750 instead cuz I think that is a better dell and even a better laptop.

But I will say this, this 15" is real nice and I wouldn't give it for anything.

Sell your 12" on ebay. Make it like a 5 day auction, you'll have the notebook the whole time its up. Then when its sold, wait for the buyer to paypal you the money. Once that clears you have the money in your account, ship the notebook out and go buy that 15" that day. 1 week turnaround that trust me you will surely not regret! Thats how I got here.

As for price, you should get about 1200-1300 for 6month revd with superdrive. Maybe even more. I say go for it.

djkny: $1199? Damn, wish I was still a student Buy it and get the free iPod mini promo... then sell the iPod mini for a 1GB SODIMM I'd lean towards the 15" if you can afford it. But if you need a laptop you can carry to class, the 12" is the one. I just wish it had a better screen and didn't run so hot all the time. If the iBook had a superdrive option, I would have looked down that route too. I love being able to burn DVDs from a portable. Since you don't seem to care, give the iBook a chance.

typerlover: Do the fans come on with your 15" very often? It seems my fans are starting to come on with just a cold boot and nothing running. It is July, but it's not that hot in my room (maybe 75 max)! Geez! Now I never have any peace and quiet.

If they're running I can't seem to hear the fans. Yeah do the deal for the ipod mini, and get rid of it if you don't want it. Its a good deal.
