I am planning on purchasing a 15in powerbook. I am having trouble determining how much memory and how much video memory that I need. I am also wondering if it comes with built in wireless internet capabilities or if that is something that I will have to purchase. Also, any other advice on purchasing a powerbook would be great. Thanks.

The 15's will come with built in wireless. Unless you game, the stock 64MB VRAM should be fine. I'd go for at laeast 1GB (That's what I have on my 15" and it rocks), but don't buy from Apple.

Listen to him/her because if you want to buy 1Gb of RAM from Apple it is $500.00, and I wouldn't recommend it unless your the Donald.

Any notebook you purchase from Apple comes with a:
-Built in Airport Extreme (Equivilant to Wireless G in PC terms)

-A Combo drive (burns CD's and plays DVD-ROMS...movies, etc)

-Firewire and USB 2.0 (firewire for importing of digital movies...if you're into that...and USB, as the connectivity STANDARD for almost any or all hardware out there...digital cameras, scanners, printers, flash drives, etc)

-Excellent battery life. Apple excels in battery life, most ibooks and powerbooks get around 2-3 hours min. This depends on what you're doing.

Now, Powerbooks compared to ibooks. It really depends what you're looking for. Like B Gallagher was mentioning above, if you're only going to be using your Apple notebook for basic functions such as itunes(music, cd burning), safari(internet surfing)...word processing, etc...then an ibook is the perfect choice, and are amazingly cheap in price. That doesnt mean to say that ibooks compromise quality for lack of quantity. The opposite is true, every ibook is made of strong polycarbonite. I should know, the first ibook I owned (a 500mhz) dropped 4 feet onto cement pavement. Only a large scratch to tell the tale. These are STRONG units.

However, on to the Powerbook side...
These units are entirely made of specially molded Aluminum, the whole entire body. Which is impressive, and durable. You get a choice of a 12", 15" and 17"...again, the size really depends on what you're going to be doing with it. The Powerbooks do boast a HUGE difference in speed, starting with the system board, the processor(being 1.5 instead of 1.3), the video card, expansion and ports. They are power units that can handle the intensive tasks without any hesitation (video editing, midi...such as garageband...graphics..photoshop, etc). It will make a day and night difference if that is the sort of market you are after.

I hope this information has helped in some way. Good luck shopping!

Slightly off topic, but if any of you are looking to buy an Apple, I just saw an ad that CompUSA is having an employee discount:

http://www.compusa.com/specials/prom...=cj&pfp=cj

Might be a couple hundred in savings depending on what you get versus retail. Not trying to advertised for them or anything so if this message is inappropriate, let me know and I will delete it.

I know that the word has been that apple's RAM is WAY too expensive. But I see that upgrading the 15" PB from 512 to 1GB (512 x 2) is NOW only a $150 upgrade. Not THAT much more than via 3rd party. Plus: it'll be under the Apple warranty (significant for convenience and security - given OS X's rep for sensitivity to RAM quality).
