12" 1 ghz G4 iBook
256 MB of RAM
30 GB hard drive
Mac OS X 10.3.7

Those are the specs. What do you guys think I could get for it? I'm thinking about upgrading to a Powerbook soon after I purchase a new iMac, and I have no idea what I might get for this.

Check ebay. I've been thinking of selling mine, with same specs. They seem to run for about $700 - $1000 (CAD).

In general, I've seen old iBooks WAY overpriced, as compared to what you would pay for a refurb iBook from Apple. It's amazing what people pay for old iBooks.

You left out processor speed. While it is not the "be all and end all" of computing, it is an important specification that will tell the potential buyer what to expect. There's a big difference between an 800MHz G4 and a 1.2GHz G4.

Look at the top. 1 ghz G4 processor. I bought it about 2 months before they upgraded to 1.2. Then I wanted to kill Apple.

Odds are put it on ebay, set your reserve at 800 and be happy with what you get. I imagine you might even get as high as 900 or more... people are stupid with auctions. I see 6 year old iMacs going for like 200 bucks that's insane unless you want a really awesome file server.

Macs retain their value very well compared to PCs, the later revision G3 iMacs could probably get more than 200.
g4/1.5 GHz 12 inch powerbook / 1.25 RAM / 80 gig / Superdrive / 10.5.6
g3/400 MHz Pismo / 640 RAM / 40 gig / Combo Drive / 10.3.9

Thanks for the responses, guys. I just keep thinking that once they significantly upgrade the iBooks, I won't be able to get nearly as much for it as I'd like. Right now the debate is between getting an iMac first for some simple video editing for my youth group, or getting a 15" Powerbook. Hopefully I'll be able to make a move towards one very soon.

Okay, I just checked out eBay, and some guy is about to sell a 1.2 GHz iBook for $1,033. What are people out there thinking?

Probably nothing.

But if you find a buyer who doesn't think, it works out for a great deal
No wonder that many people still think Macs are overpriced...

I have no idea how my eyes completely skipped over that! I am very embarrassed about this. Sorry.

Don't be too upset with Apple; the 1.2GHz G4s weren't available when they were supposed to be, and I think the 1GHz version was a fall-back model. And either way, the "big difference" I mentioned has more to do with newness than performance.

(Still embarrassed here...)

No worries on skipping over. You probably skim across like I do. Easy to miss stuff that way.

I wasn't' really upset with Apple. More upset with the circumstance. If I had waited a few months, I'd have gotten a better processor and Airport Extreme for free. I had to buy my wireless card later on. Just one of those things.

I certainly hear you on that score. We bought my wife's iBook in time for the start of her last two semesters, and it was a godsend for her. But it is an 800MHz machine that we had to add AirPort to in configuring it (we knew we'd need it). Shortly after that the base model went up to 1GHz-no big increase in performance, but it is something.

Having been involved with Intel PCs for a long time, I've learned that once you buy some computer something, it's a good idea to ignore the ads for a while, sometimes a LONG time! Otherwise you run into the "if I'd only waited" syndrome.

It's so hard to ignore ads though, because I visit Apple's site every single day, not to mention MacCentral and other sites. So I'm always going to suffer from "if I'd only waited" syndrome. It's okay. That's just the nature of the business. I guess I'll just have to upgrade every 2 years or so.

Sounds like a pretty good price to me. Has to be fairly new. Have you already received it, or is it on its way?
