Yes, there's probably an OS thread somewhere, but specifically for PowerBook users (so mods don't lock!): has your drive/fan noise come down at all? Other PowerBook-specific improvements?

Thanks.

Was just about to ask the same (fan noise). Hope anybody has had any experiences. Otherwise I'll try it tomorrow.

I've been running 10.4.2 for about two hours now... many graphical improvements in the speed and responsiveness department... but alas, the fans are still spinning when the only app I have open is Safari I really wish they would do something about these fans... Otherwise, I think this is the best update expereince I've had ever with OSX.

My fans have come on maybe once or twice from the beginning of owning my Powerbook.
I have 2GB of ram since the beginning.. so it could be that... But i also see that you have 1.25GB which is the max.

Since upgrading to 10.4.2... i found startup a little slower than before... It could be because of just the fresh update...

Transparent Dock no longer works... but you can find other version of it online.

Same. Slow startup (probably because of first); fans still on, but noticeable graphics improvement.

I had the exact problem when I upgraded my powerbook from 10.3.9 to 10.4. For some reason, Tiger changes your power setting and sets the CPU usage to "Better Performance.". This was driving me crazy because the fans would come on even when I was only using Safari.

Sure enough, the problem went away as soon as I changed my power setting for "Normal" performance. Since then the fan has perhaps come on once or twice and only during CPU intensive operations.

Hope this helps.

My power settings were on "Normal" from day one. I've tweaked them, but always leave the processor on "Automatic" I tried putting them back to "Normal" (all default, no tweaks), but the fans are still on too often for me.

One other nice thing I've noteiced about 10.4.2, the HD actually spins down occasionally leaving me with blissful slient computing (until I launch an App or do something that needs data not in memory). From 10.3.7 to 10.4.1, the HD would NEVER spin down, EVER, even though the "put the disks to sleep" box was checked. If left inactive for up to 20 minutes (the longest I had tested), the laptop would spin down the HDs while going to sleep, but never before (even with just sitting there staring at the desktop with nothing running). I always suspected this was a bug. Now it does the job, but I would prefer a slider bar to have some control over it. A RAM disk app would be cool too If they fixed the fans and added a HD slide control, then I could have a silent system (for awhile).
