Your computer came with a manual and your machine has a handy Help menu. You should have no problem getting connected wirelessly with Airport.

Should be pretty easy if the network is not encrypted. Go to the network system preferences, and select airport from the menu. In the next panel make sure the selection is "by default, join Automatic". Next make sure the box to show Airport status in menu bar is checked. Click Apply now. Close the System preferences. If the Airport has not already selected a network, click on the airport icon in the menu bar and click on the appropriate network. If it is encrypted, you should be offered a chance to put in the password, if it is unecrypted you should be connected. Hope this helps.

Expanding a bit on what ibook_steve mentioned there, besides the Apple specific parts which are indeed mentioned in the manual and in the help function on your powerbook, most wireless networks are (hopefully) protected by either MAC address (a basic and unique hardware code for a network device) locking or WEP keys (Wireless Encryption Protocol. Meaning you need a pass key, which is verified with the wireless access point. No valid WEP key, no access). If I were you, I'd ask your university systems admin or helpdesk about setting it up with your universities wireless network.

I think the best way is to contact your school.
Usually if its encrypted.. a message will pop up when you launch a browser telling you what to do.
If not, contact your school's IT department.

It may be helpful to uncheck the "block pop-up windows." Or while in safari prese "command+K"

Yeah it should. I wouldn't see why not. Just give it a go.

eww....that sucks...

although, it shouldn't be a problem at my school, as half the people have Macs.
if they did that...then that would totally suck, yes.

our school uses a gateway type thing that shows a login screen once you open a web browser (redirects you or sometimes you have to manually go to that address)... once you've authenticated through that site you're fine to use anything (msn, email, etc.)... they apparently don't believe in using wep because it's slower than an unencrypted network... this solution appears to be platform independent and seems to work just fine...
