It looks like I can buy a new 17" pb with panther for about $300 less than the cheapest 17" pb I can find with tiger. It would be my first mac and I'm wondering if it would be worth it to buy the cheaper and buy the upgrade. Thanks for any feedback.

If the upgrade is less than 300, then it is worth it. Not exactly rocket science.

Depending upon if the machines are identical spec wise it seems like a no brainer to me. Tiger can be had for around $100, even less if your a student. You can take that extra money and invest in ram, which is the most significant upgrade you can do to help with performance.

I guess my concern is.....maybe the panther machine is an earlier revision (model???) with a latch problem or other minor prob I've read about that may have been corrected with a newer machine,,,, and if I get the cheaper machine will I have to install panther first and then tiger everytime if/when I ever re-install the OS like in a PC with an upgrade of Windows.

If the machine is a 1.67 GHz model, then they are the same. The 1.67 GHz 17" PowerBook comes with dual link DVI to connect to the 30" Apple Cinema HD display, motion sensor and protection for the hard drive, brighter keyboard illumination, and digital sound out (if I'm not mistaken).
Scooters are more fun than computers and only slightly more frustrating
