I remember that only a few months ago, a stick of 1GB Crucial memory (for the PowerBook) was about $400. It's now under $200. When did that happen? Have I been under a rock?

Yeah, perhaps I'll go from 1 to 1.5.

As expounded upon in this thread.
The performance boost when going from the stock RAM amount to the minimum acceptable amount is eye-opening. Shame on Apple for even selling hardware with such a tiny amount. The only people who win by this are Apple. All the non-techie users - like my Dad and in-laws - bitch and whine about how their new hardware slogs and wasn't worth the money. It's just not worth the pennies Apple makes on this transaction.
Or at least, Steve, put a note in the box that says something like "for your convenience and ability to use this machine out of the box we've included a very minimum amount of memory. For a significant speed boost please consider upgrading to 1 GB."
Meh.
