right now, when i close the lid of my 15" Powerbook, it appears to go into a 'stand by' mode. however, i would like the screen to turn off, but have the computer run normally in this situation.

is that doable?

The program that does this is called Sleepless . Read the warnings, don't kill your LCD.

this isn't what you want, this keeps the screen on... i'm looking for a similar program, somthing that allows the lcd to turn off but everything else to work as normal when you shut the lid.

Actually, it prevents the computer from falling asleep, hence the name. What would the use be otherwise? The only way to get what you want would be to trick the computer into thinking an external monitor was attached.

Just turn the backlight off manually before you close the lid.

backlight never goes completely off, but you can set the LCD to sleep in a minute or two.

If you run the brightness all of the way down, the backlight does go off.

maybe i'm confused at what the backlight is.

what i'm saying is the screen just doesn't go completely off even at 0 bars. i can still see (very faintly) what i'm doing. there's a difference at 0 bars and when the screen is totally off.

but there is a big difference between 0 bars and 1 bar, so maybe that's what the backlight is. just correct me if i'm wrong

The backlight is a white light that makes it so you can view an lcd in the dark. What that person said about the monitor sleeping would work. Make an apple script that does it or something. The problem is that a lot of heat is released from the keyboard so you should be really careful what you do with the lid ****, maybe turn the power setting down to avoid roasting ur lcd.

You're right sort of. At zero bars, the backlight (the white light behind the screen) is off. The screen pixels are still on, though. You can see them very faintly without the backlight. However, they are solid state devices and don't really wear out. There is no harm having the screen on with the backlight off.
