Hallo.

I just got my 15" Powerbook back from repair (it's brand new) and something odd that's been in the back of my head is still cropping up.

There is, at varying times, a delay that lasts 3-20 seconds between when I press the power button and when the first "grey Apple" screen shows up. Additionally, the machine does not always produce the startup chime when I press the power button (this made figuring out when I had correctly reset the PRAM somewhat troublesome).

The machine always, however, does boot up. In each of these situations, the machine has been located on a hard, level, stable surface so the sudden-motion-sensor would not have been locking the HDD heads. This also happens both on battery and AC power, with no obvious bias towards either.

I'm not sure if this is normal behaviour or not. Being a relatively new "switcher," I therefore beseech those who have more experience: Is this normal? If it isn't, is it a harbinger of doom, or something that I can fix?

Thanks!

I'm not really sure what's wrong, if anything. The startup bong does not bong if you had the computer muted when you shut it off.

Well, if he's resetting the PRAM, the bong should come back because it resets the system volume even if it is muted.
