Is there any way to put the display to sleep, manually? Dimming it all the way still leaves stuff on the screen. I don't want a blank screensaver, either: I want to accomplish what it does automatically after a set period of time, without putting the actual machine to sleep.

You have your brightness to dim the screen and Energy Saver to put it to sleep. Those are not the same things. What exactly are you trying to do?

No, I can't just turn the brightness all the way down. If you look carefully, it's still displaying the contents of the screen, but it's extremely dim. I want it black. As in, asleep. Gone. So that I'm not wasting battery life by displaying the contents of the screen, and so that I can't look closely and actually see what's open. I want to tell the screen to display nothing whenever I feel like it.

For what purpose do you want to do it? I mean, the pickiest part of the screen is the ccl bulb. It is prevented from damage if you manually dim it. The dim appearing shapes are the pixel transistors still being in the "open" and "shut" position. If they don“t fail within the first few weeks they will hardly fail ever. So why be concerned about this?

Are you trying to save battery life? Just get the Energy settings to longest battery life, turn off the backlit keyboard, don't keep a disc in the drive, turn off bluetooth and Airport when not in use. Turn monitor down and stop worrying about it. Or get a second battery if you have a 15.

This was the correct answer. Did the original poster miss it somehow?

FWIW, I just dim it all the way if I have to leave it open while I sleep. You can't tell the difference unless you look up close. And I have my Energy settings to turn off the display after 10 minutes if the PB is plugged in. If 10 minutes is too long, set it lower. Beyond that, you're really nitpicking over battery life.
