Well, my PB had been experiencing "light sabre" problems again with it's drive - I always back-up once a week, but for once I had gone 10 days without backing up this time. The grinding and Star Wars related sounds that my PB's HD was giving off was worrying - especially when it wouldn't wake from sleep and was pain stakingly slow at rebooting too.

Then I got the folder with the question mark and I was at a loss... I put in the DW disk and rebooted. DW could not see my directory folder (to graph it) so I just rebuilt the directory. This took a bit longer than usual but woohoo! I was able to reboot on the newly built drive. I am backing up with SuperDuper as I write this post and will be looking at sending my PB in to a registered Apple technical centre. I am still getting these whirring and grinding noises, made even worse when you pick up and move the PB around (for effect) - sorry for the Star Wars reference but it REALLY does sound like a light sabre!

Just wanted ppl out there who had not tried DiskWarrior yet to purchase this lifesaving piece of software (well, imho anyway) - not the 1st time DW has helped me out of a tricky spot... but definitely the ONE time I needed it's help.

Apologies to those who already know this...

And yeah, that's GMT... I did all this at 4.30am

I had this happen on an almost-one-year old powerbook back in March. I was still under warranty so sent it in for repairs. The sound really is harsh and yes it changes as you move the PB around.

It was an 80G, 7200 toshiba if I recall correctly - an April 2004 PB bought in the UK.

Disk Warrior is a 'must have' for all Powerbook users.
