Ok here's my problem; when ripping an audio CD in Itunes, I am getting lousy speeds. With error correction off, I am topping out at about 2.5x. Now, the interesting part is that I had error correction turned on previously, and would get speeds of up to 10x roughly. Now, I believe that in either case, those speeds are low for this year old iBook. Anybody have any suggestions or thoughts on the cause of this problem?

If the CD has any scratches or marks on it, the drive will spin it slower to read the data. Try a perfectly new CD and see if you don't get at least 10x consistently.

See, I thought about that, however I take meticulous care of my CD's, and most if not all are in pristine condition.

If your iBook isn't on a level surface, that can affect ripping speed. Also check to make sure your processor is set to "highest" performance.

I wouldn't recomend using Itunes for ripping CDs.
Exact Auddio Copy is a much better choice. Unfortunately it is only available for Windows.

How helpful. Anyway, if anything, EAC would be slower than iTunes, so it wouldn't solve the original poster's problem.

Actually, EAC is at leasts as fast as iTunes on a Windows machine.

What kind of speed are you experiencing? Can you quantify it?

Like I said, it varies. The lowest I get is 2x, the highest is about 10x. 10x I can almost manage with. but I still think it should be higher.

This is an excellent point. The system needs a lot of space to queue up what you're going to burn, and if it isn't fairly contiguous, it has to search for it or at least "seek" the data on the drive, which can eat up time. The more free space you have on your drive, the better burning will go, and it will probably be faster too.
