I own a November 2002 Tibook (1 Ghz, 512 MB RAM) with which I have only experienced minor troubles up until now. About a year ago though, I got this strange flickering screen-bug: Depending on where I put pressure under the 'book, the screen starts to flicker crazily. Sometimes it doesn't come up for days or weeks, sometimes it can be solved by searching for another "pressure point" underneath the Tibook, but just as often it will freeze, leaving force quit as the only way out. During the last few weeks, the Tibook has become more and more moody, often freezing right after startup and exhibiting other problems which I think are linked to this whole flickering screen-thing.
Now, I have read up on this bug and it seems as if in almost all cases, this problem could only be permanently fixed by replacing the mainboard (maybe even the screen). I am no longer under warranty and I don't have Apple Care, so I would have to pay up... I'm wondering: How much might the repair cost me? Is the Tibook even worth repairing or should I just save money for a new one (this would bug me, but so would losing the computer for weeks due to repairs)? Should I just try to put up with the flickering screen and the crashes? If I do, will the screen die on me? I'm really a bit clueless right now.

This problem will only get worse as time goes on. To my knowledge (which may not be complete) it starts with the inverter board which powers the LCD. Sometimes the cable going to the LCD needs to be replaced, too. If it is causing your PB to freeze, then the motherboard will likely need to be replaced as well. Eventually the thing will just die, it;s only a matter of time. If this started happening a year or so ago, you've been lucky!
Replacing the motherboard is very expensive, easily half of what you would pay for a used 1 GHz TiBook on eBay or a store that sells used Macs. My vote would be to replace your Tibook -- either with a brand new one if you can afford it, or a used one if you can find it for a good price.

At least if you find a used 1GHz TiBook then between your two batteries you might bet the battery life of one good battery!

This sounds like a mainboard problem to me. And yes, it will cost alot to replace. Sorry.
