my powerbook hd is failing and a lot of times i can't even get to the login screen [i get to starting mac osx then the progress bar goes a little then the whole thing fades into a blue screen with a cursor and nothing happens] but once in a while [very luckily] i get logged in and can use stuff. lately i copied my most important stuff [documents & work folders] onto my ipod and then i was playing around and my pb froze and then i for restarted it and now i keep getting these. i was wondering if there was anyway to get the data on the hard drive? my music is on there and since you can't retrieve music from ipod into your itunes then that would be hard. and my family photos are on there as well as the apps & haxies i use [pspware, cs2, shapeshifter] plus the other apps and their serials. and all my MAILS!!!. i was going to send it in to apple for repair or i was thinking if it was possible to sell it on ebay and get an edu discount on a new 12" pb rev.d with 768 ram upped [~1450] which was cheaper than my crappy rev.b and since you get a free ipod mini, sell that 200 also which might even stuff out or maybe i'd lose a couple hundred, nothing major.

// i read on their website apple doesn't preserve data. HELP! //

so also part is if i were to sell my powerbook on ebay or something how much could i get? 12" rev.b superdrive 1ghz 40gb[failing] 768mb, etc. would it be enough +200 to almost equal 1200-1400. that means the ideal sell would be 900-1300 thanks.

// if i went to genius bar, could i get them to preserve the data? //

thanks

If you knew your hard drive was failing, why didn't you perform a complete backup? In any case, start up your machine in target disk mode (hold T at boot), hook it up as a Firewire drive and get your stuff off of there, if you can. If you can't mount the disk, you can try a disk repair program. If nothing works, you're kind of stuck.

I concur with the poster above. At the beginning of this month, my hd started clicking and I knew it was about to fail. I made sure I had complete backups and even ran my powerbook off an external drive for a while when the hd did fail until I was able to get a new drive installed. I got the new drive, dumped my backups back onto the new HD and I was up and running in a matter of hours. You never know when things are about to fail so you should have a complete backup at all times but this is even more crucial when you know it is about to fail. (Danni gets off her soapbox now) If your hd is truly dead, you will have to pay big bucks (Drivesavers I believe is one company) to try to get data off the drive.

In Terminal use something like:

ditto -V --rsrc /Volumes/<Dead HDD Volume Name> /Volumes/<iPod HDD Name>/Backup

This will copy all the data over. Usually works just fine, test to make sure it copies over OK, probably also run Disk Repair over the disk first, then copy.
