The 12'' PB user's guide that came in the box says to shut down if you're not using your PB for "a day or two" and to put it to sleep when you're not using it for "a little while". I'm not particularly worried about it, but what is the consensus on treating your PB...? If you're away from 2-3 hours, I say sleep.... but what about 4-6 or 10-12 hours... then what do you do? Also, do you continuously drain and recharge the battery or do you usually run it on AC when at home?
BTW, my PB is not doesn't run hotter than hell, the display isn't horribly small, the viewing angle isn't awful, and not having a SuperDrive doesn't bother me. Not that I'm trying to discredit anyone who's ever said that in a forum, but those were the arugments I weighed when thinking about my purchase... and that's what I would say to a prospective PB buyer.
PS... I love it because it's so small..!

As long as you have air circulating underneath it and run the maintenance scripts, put it to sleep unless you are not going to be using it for a few days.

I'd leave a PowerBook sleeping. The only reason I shut down my PowerMac is a) to save power and b) to stop it from heating up my room (it actually makes a noticable difference). Sleeping would probably have the same effect, but why half-ass it when it's just as easy to ...whole-ass it?
[Edit: Oh, also the pulsing light pisses me off and my computer's right next to my bed.]

My ibook has been going from on to sleep and back again every day for over 200 days so I think you can do whatever you want.
nonhuman: apple actually released an update for the new imacs to dim the power light IIRC. I leave my MDD on partly to avoid the pulsating as well.

Sleep.
In three years of ownership my PB has been shutdown less than 10 times, with no side effects. The only time I shutdown my machine is if I know that I am going to be away from it for a few days.
I also tend not to sleep it as well (I use it for folding proteins) which means my PB is typically on about 23 out of 24 hours.

let it sleep if you want. shut it down if you want.
It can sleep on a battery for about a week, so if you're going to be away from it longer than that, that is the only time I would say you should shut it down. Other than that, do as you please

i usually just sleep it and then shut it down 2-3 days. i shut it down if i want my room to not be illuminated by the sleep light and if i want to unplug the power cord. otherwise, i just let it sleep whenever im not using it for a few hours or transporting it between school and home.
oh btw i was doing some researching about maintenance scrips and stuff. i decided to download anacron. i have no idea how it works or anything. do i have to set it up to do its periodic checks or does it do it automatically?

Sleeping it for 1.5 years... sleep it, much easier than shutdown. I've left it sleeping for periods up to 6-7 days without any problems. All sleep does is keep the RAM contents so it can resume where it left of quick.

I always sleep. I never shutdown. I only restart after software install/updates.
