Uh... the screens are the same? What do you want to discuss? Are you trying to choose one over the other?

Yes.

The iBook is $949 and the PowerBook is $1399 (with the ed. discount).

Which one is better?

The 12" PB will be outclassed by Apple's lineup of Intels in less than a year, so unless you need something (dual monitor support without hacks etc) that the PB can do, I'd say iBook and save $450.

Bump up the iBooks memory with the price difference - makes a huge difference to the machine's performance. Get at least a gig.

Good insight.

How noticeable do you think the difference is, video-wise?

The iBook has 32 MB VRAM and an ATI Mobility Radeon 9550

The PowerBook has 64 MB VRAM and an NVIDIA GeForce FX

That seems to be the biggest difference

to be honest I don't know - I have heard that the Radeon 9550 is a slowed down 9700 and should be able to run CoreImage - which the previous iBook couldn't do - note 'should' - I'm not certain

http://forums.macnn.com/69/mac-notebooks/264453/ibook-graphics-radeon-9200-vs-radeon/

^comparing video cards - also the consensus seems to be that it will run CI

If you want to run games then maybe the PB is the better bet, but the increase in RAM does make a difference, especially if you are going to use several apps together - even if its just Safari and a few others.

Powerbook has faster and larger hard drives than an iBook.
PB has slightly faster processor.
You can get a superdrive on 12" PB.
Better graphics card on PB.

To me, those are the only real differences. You just need to decide if those things are important. I personally have a 12" PB and would get one again. Aluminum is too cool. My next PB will have Intel inside though.

Interesting discussion. I know we're comparing systems with Apple's configuration, but consider this -- how would a 14" iBook compare to the 12" Powerbook if you stick in a 5400rpm drive and another 1gb (1.5 total) of ram? They come out to about the same price if you shop around (Newegg), and the main advantage of the powerbook is an 80mhz faster processor, a smaller frame, and a slightly better graphics processor. I'd take more memory, the superdrive, and the larger screen... Sorry if this is off topic -- I wasn't sure if it was worthy of its own thread.

Other differences: PB keyboard is better, iBook airport reception and battery life are slightly better. As noted above, PB allows a DVI connection to an external monitor, and that and the larger HD were the main factors for me, but I think for most people the iBook is fine.

i think PB 12' is far too thick than what real 12' size laptop should be, unacceptable, which is same as ibook 12, furthermore, both got BAD screen!
i would say buying 15'-17' Powerbook is the only wise choice if you are going to buy apple laptop, otherwise, go for PC laptop, cheaper, thinner, better support by your Uni or collage (from the perspective of software), my school only support windows software, no mac version
Another point is, if you are entry level user, just with a little bit care of your OS , windows would run just fine for you, i assuming entry user would only open 10 apps, which contains PS or other Pro apps.i have used a PC for 3 years, only crush 1 time.
TO sum up, better go for a PC laptop, which suit you better.
All the thing above just personal opinion, do not open fire on me,lol

Yes but don't the 12 and 15-inch screens have the SAME resolution? (i.e., same amount of real estate)

After owning an iBook G3 for two years (it was a 12"), I found that I wouldn't WANT anything other than a 12". Most who've owned the smaller versions of these laptops would agree. They're FAR more portable (about as big as an 8.5x11" piece of paper) - and a lot more discreet when you bust it out in public.
