Hey everyone. I just got my new 15" PB and I love it. I am wondering, however, how long the battery should at least last, running Photoshop the entire time (working on it) with the energy saver turned on, Bluetooth and Airport both turned off. Let me know if you have any idea..Thanks a bunch.

I don't have a PB but from my experiences I'm going to say somewhere around 3:30, with the screen dimmed to one bar and the processor at reduced.

I haven't tried the screen dimming - but so far I get only 2.3 hours out of it with Photoshop - Should I ask for a new one? I just received the PB 3 days ago..

Really? I only get 2.5-3 hours, even with the "better battery life' option on.

The backlight is still one of the largest power consumption components on any laptop. Also, photoshop tends to be disc intensive, so you're HD may be spooling up more than with other applications. If you have bluetooth, and aren't using it, you can power it off (same with airport).

From what you say, I'd agree that 2-2.5 hours is typical. Just dimming the screen should gain you a fair bit of usage time. My Dec. 1.5GHz 15" can go over 4 hours if just surfing, email and such, with the screen dimmed way down. If I push the screen brightness to mid-way, that time will drop by at least an hour.

how do you callibrate your battery? is this just the different power modes, or something else?

Yes, I calibrated it twice but I don't think I checked the keyboard light - I will do that again tonight and I'll try without Photoshop - I'll let you all know how it turned out. Thanks for your input, guys.

Calibrating simply means to charge your battery fully and then unplug the AC adapter and drain the battery until the computer goes to sleep (force sleep for that matter). I spoke to Apple and they said that doing that actually helps a lot with the long term life of your battery.

I get around 3:00 - 3:10 with wifi + bluetooth on with the brightness set at around 3-5 bars (set at better battery life). With wifi and bluetooth off, I guess I could squeeze another 30 minutes out of the battery. When I'm running with bluetooth on (wifi off) and at better performance, I average about 2:00 - 2:20.

Thanks.

Do you run Photoshop as one of your applications? I do, and I get the feeling that Photoshop takes up a lot of battery..I am assuming because the processor has to work harder or faster..
