I can boot in verbose (sp?) mode, but if I try to boot in safe mode it'll boot in verbose again.

The nearest Apple Store is about two hours away, and I don't have a car. Help please?

Are you sure you're booting correctly into Safe Boot? Be sure and hold down the Shift key once you hear the startup chime.

I thought it was command - S. But still, holding the Shift key takes me to the same restart screen.
