I have a 12" iBook 1.2Ghz. I already have 512MB PC2700 extra installed on it. I wanted to get 1GB but the one I've been offerd is PC2100. Would it still be better than the 512MB?

Regardless of the speed of the RAM chip it will run at the speed that your motherboard supports. In your case, I think its pc2100 to begin with so the 512mb pc2700 chip has already been downclocked. Don't worry about the speed, just put in lots of ram and you will be happy. On a side note, I like to get ram that is faster since it improves its resale value and gives it a better chance in working in my next machine.

So I'll just ge 1Gb PC2100. 1GB PC2700 costs £349 in London Regents Street Store and there is an apple centre just 5 minutes away from it which sells 1GB PC2100 for £170, so the price difference is almost £200 or around $370. Since I got my iBook just 3 months ago, I don’t think I’ll be selling it in the near future

Thank!

Just to clarify, RAM will clock down to match the speed of your motherboard. You can't buy PC2100 and expect it to run at PC3200 speeds with a PC3200 motherboard.

bradoesch is correct. Sorry if I was unclear about downclocking speeds. Another reason I often get faster RAM is since it is frequently cheaper since its more available.

Yes, you can get good RAM third party for far less than Apple sells it for. You should be able to do even better than 170 quid, as the going price in the USA is $144 here http://www.datamem.com/viewcat.asp_Q_C_E_1152
Installing RAM in the iBook is easy, just make sure you have it fully inserted into the socket before you rotate it down into the horizontal position. THere shoud be very little if any of the gold contacts showing once the pins are inserted all the way.

Are the prices that different between PC2700 and PC2100 there?

Around here:

1 GB PC2700 SODIMM - CAD$168 (£77)
1 GB PC3200 SODIMM - CAD$176 (£81)

They don't even bother selling 1 GB PC2100 at my local store.

For 512 MB:

PC2100 - CAD$68
PC2700 - CAD$70
PC3200 - CAD$73

I just bought PC3200. If the Intel PowerBooks in 2006 use PC3200, I can just transfer the memory over when I buy one. (They may end up using DDR2 though.)
