I am looking at getting my first Mac. I was wondering if the iBook 12" would suit my needs for some photo editing in CS2 and some light video editing in iMovie. (was hoping to buy real soon with the free ipod, but if there are updates before this year is over i could wait.)
Also, need the iBook to take to school everyday and type papers. And later was thinking of getting an iMac in a few months to take over with the photo/video editing and burn the movies and a faster machine. And just use the iBook for portability and light work.
Please reply with any info on this combo. Or, suggest something better if you think there is like a PB. Anyways, thanks in advance.

The iBook will be perfect for your needs. You might just want to add some memory if you are working on large pictures with Photoshop. The iBook has just been updated, so it's the perfect time to buy.

Considering there isn't a night and day speed difference between the 12" PB and 12" iBook... and you don't need the pro features that come with the PB... it's a perfect selection. The iBook will work well with iMovie and basic photo editing. I run Quark/Photoshop/Illustrator on mine (granted, these aren't big projects) and it works rather well. I wouldn't want to do it all day, but it's great for normal use.
Regarding the school usage, it's perfect. You may want to buy the iBook and hold out for the Intel Macs that are coming in anywhere from 6 to 18 months (if you can wait that long). That's what I'm doing...
Cheers, and have fun!

Btw, make sure you do NOT buy extra memory from Apple. They charge too much for it. Get the standard config which already has 512mb, and get an extra 512mb if you need it from Crucial : http://www.crucial.com

Ok, I made up my mind, i'll be getting the 12" iBook in a month or so. I'll probably get it with the base memory but a bigger harddrive and add more memory later. But I was just wondering how does it do with a bigger moniter like 17" - 20" for home use. Thanks.

I have another question (I am or was PB00k, but changed my username). I saw on another thread that the powerbooks might be getting updated soon, so will the iBooks also be getting updated again since they were just updated? well just wondering.

PowerBooks might get updated before the end of the year (maybe at Apple Expo, end of September), but the iBook won't get any update before at least 6 months.

Thanks, but how does this 12" iBook work with a bigger monitor like 17" - 20". And could i use a 24 incher or would it be too hard for the iBook to push that size of monitor?
Please recommend a good monitor to use with the iBook.
