i got my first mac today. a 15" powerbook. ended up costing around 2700 with the free ipod mini, superdrive, and applecare. i cannot imagine why i used windows for years. i love osx. the only thing so far that i cant figure out is how to get into preferences without already setting up an account. i need to get into gmail but gmail uses a different smtp port (not 25) but other than that i love this os. i talked my mom into getting an ibook already.

Grats

If you are talking about mail.app All you need to do is create an account with the default settings then go to [Mail > Preferences > Accounts] From there you can change the SMTP port under the Account Information tab through the Server Settings button.

For information on POP3 access to Gmail through Apple Mail, see this link:

Congrats! I should have purchased my iMac with my education discount, but I thought the education discount was only available during a school year. I was sorely mistaken. I could've saved oodles of money that could've been well spent on accessories and stuff. I'll remember to use the discount on my next Mac, likely an Intel Powerbook.

Should be the POP Setting.

And Remember, You have to set up Gmail to for POP forewarding first. This is done through the normal web interface that you go to.

Your Gmail site will have detailed instructions on how to set up Mail to use Gmail
