G3 iBook optical drive replacement

I have a basic CD-ROM in my G3 iBook and would like to upgrade to a combo drive. Can I buy a used G3 combo drive from a parted out iBook and replace my current drive, or is external the way to go? Any info or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
