For this coming school year, I've decided to add a new member to my growing Apple family which currently consists of an iMac G5 20" & a 6GB iPod mini. I plan on purchasing a 12" iBook Combo Drive (nothing fancy - but very functional) within the next week, and with all these amazing deals and rebates going on I couldn't resist.

But today I read the fine print of the iPod rebate coupon on the education page of the Apple store. It says "1. Shop for your Mac.
The following computers qualify for this offer: all PowerBook models, all iMac models, all Power Mac models, and all iBook models excluding the 12-inch iBook CD."

Are you kidding me? I really wanted that mini so I could give it to my father - he'd love an iPod. I can't believe they would exclude all 12" iBooks and include almost every other Mac out there.

Or am I reading this wrong? I read a few other postings on how others out there just bought 12" iBooks for themselves and bought the mini along with it: have you had any problems with the rebate coupon and did you receive your check from Apple yet? Heck, when I went into the Apple store 2 days ago I had a conversation about the deal with an Apple store employee and I heard no mention of the exclusion from him.

Please let me know. I was really looking forward to purchasing this laptop with a mini alongside it.

Students can't even buy that CD model generally.

The combo drive version does qualify however.

I thought it was just the opposite. That only students can buy the CD version.

Anyway, OP, you are looking at the combo drive so you qualify.

Alright, awesome. I guess I thought the CD portion of the phrase actually meant 'Combo Drive' but now I'm thinking it's referring to CD-ROM instead? Regardless, I'm getting the Combo drive. Thanks everyone.

I believed that the CD-ROM model is a special order from Apple. My $949 12-inch iBook is eligible for the $179 iPod mini mail-in rebate.

Yep, Combo-Drive is NOT the same as CD-Only. Think about this: one thing the Combo-Drive can do is read DVDs...

The CD version is for departmental educational purchases. It's usually not an option for individual education customers (although you could probably still get it if you tried hard enough).

I always see it listed on my education page so I wasn't sure. For $50 though the combo drive is quite an upgrade. I always figured it was computer labs and such where they don't want students burning cd's and watching dvd's.
