The kensington security slot on the 17" powerbook is right next to where the power adapter plugs in. My existing kensington security cable wont fit while the powerbook is plugged in.

What on earth was apple thinking with this stupid design and can anyone recommend a locking gizmo that will fit the slot without needing to unplug the power ?

What Kensington cable are you using? Apple designs to the largest locking cable there is so that there is no interference. There should be enough clearance. I've never seen a clearance problem. How about a picture?

Kensington micro saver. There is no
problem on the ibook since the power and
security are on opposite sides. There is
a problem on the 17" powerbook since they are next to each other.

I have this lock and it works fine for me. It's a stupid question, but have you tried turning the cable around the lock mechanism so that it doesn't interfere with the power cable? As I said, Apple designed the ports, including the key lock, to provide enough clearance between ports even with the widest plugs installed. Maybe you have a weird cable or something. Contact Kensington. Maybe they can help you out. If you can post a photo, I'd be very interested to see it.
