My 12" PowerBook has just developed it's first problem by the sound of it. Whenever it's moved even the slightest amount a reasonably loud buzzing/gringing noise starts coming from somewhere near the left wrist-rest. It makes this noise constantly if the PB is angled vertically (i.e. ports facing up).

Am I right in thinking that's the sound of a dying hard-drive? I'm still within warranty, so I guess this is going back to Apple ASAP. If they have to replace the hard drive will they copy all my old data over to the new one, or will I have to make a backup over 15 DVD's myself?

Help and advice please...
Yadda, yadda, yadda...

BACK UP RIGHT NOW! And try to keep it level... If you need, go to the store and buy an external hard drive. If there is grinding, I don't think it will last very long... Apple will not back up your data, they expect you to do it yourself.

YES, that sound is your hard drive failing and the day will come when it will die. This happened to my 12" PB recently. The problem went away and came back a couple of times in the span of a few months, until I couldn't boot up and I had to get it replaced. That's when you are glad you are under warranty.

Investing in an external hard drive is always a wise idea, more especially at times like this. I'd want to have a backup if I had 15 DVD's store on my laptop.
The world needs more Canada.
