Hey hey. I just bought my first mac (12 inch iBook G4 1.2 GHz) ever in may 2005. I use it quite a lot to watch films on my TV (through the apple videoadapter and a screenspanning hack), but it slows down quite often, leaving the sound out of sync. I suspect this has to do with the 32 mb ram on the ati mobility 9200 graphics card, as I have 768 mb of normal memory. The ATI Display states that I only have 16 mb of available memory when I connect another screen. Is this because it divides the memory between the two screens?

Is there any way of upgrading the ATI 9200 card (installing a new one or adding more ram to the existent)?

I hope you can help me, as I am frustrated by this very nice and smooth running computer failing to show films properly...

Question #1: Yes
Question #2: No

That is one reason these iBooks are not supposed to do spanning. That and Apple feels that you should buy a PowerBook to do spanning.

Does it happen when you don't use the external monitor? I don't see why the spanning hack would affect video playback. Which program do you use to watch movies? Try to use MPlayer, and make sure you select the option 'drop frame on slower machines' in the preferences. It will allow the audio/video to always be in sync.

You can get mplayer here : http://ftp5.mplayerhq.hu/mplayer/rel...CVS-050724.dmg

edit: I assumed here you were watching divx files... Are you playing DVDs with DVD Player?

As far as video goes, you're stuck. Like most laptops, the video is basically integrated into the mainboard.

Yes, it's when watching divx files. I don't use it for dvd's. And I've got the entire 32 megs of ram available when only using one screen and I use VLC for playing the divx files. Thanks for the help anyway. I'll try and download mplayer. Is that the best program for viewing divx-files?

I do think mplayer is the best to view divx files. The option to drop frame on slower machines works pretty well and you should always have audio and video in sync. Moreover mplayer manages to play more video than VLC from what i've seen.

NO! I would say Quicktime Player properly configured is the best movie player as it will always use less system resources. Make sure you get the correct codec for QT to run the DIVX movie..

WRT Screen spanning hack to run movies in the "bigger?" screen from an iBook. I presume that you don't want to do anything else (with the iBook screen at same time?). If the movie is not running smothly. You should shut off (or at least hide) other applications.. Switching off the finder can also be good. (cunningfox is a good app to pause apps during playback.
N.B. I can always find-a-way to get good playback on my iBook G4 800MHz on a 19" screen for DiVX movies in Quicktime. However I have not run any movies with really HD resolutions...

That Apple cripple screen spanning on iBooks by default is just criminal IMHO!
