Hey I have a 12 inch PowerBook, rev B. And yesterday I was supposed to be going some recording of a voice over. Well when I plugged in the head set I got no reception from the line in aside from plugging it in (IE the metre would jump a bit as the end went in and out but nothing after that). I tried someone else's logitech headset same deal. We ended up having to use a camcorder to record the voice over which really sucks cause I'll be wasting a lot more HD space with that footage.

The meter jumping when you plugged it in indicates that it's working.

However, it's a LINE in, not a MIC in.

You'll need a mixer or something to pre-amplifiy a plain microphone signal.

I take it you have fiddled with the input volume in the Sound System Preference?

Sounds like you need the Griffin Technology iMic. It's USB and supports both mike in and line level in.

Alternatively, go to the iListen website and check out their advice on mikes. Namely, get a good quality USB noise cancelling headset with mike. A lot of PC headsets don't have enough amp for the Mac.
