My g3 500mhz ibook screen died . . . if I look very carefully in the right lighting, I can see a faint image of bright objects on the screen . . . looking on the net, I think the inverter is dead. If this is the case, do you think it is worth the cost to fix or should I sell it off for parts. (by the way, I have no idea how much it will cost to fix if this is really the problem).

When using a vga adaptor and connecting to a projector I can view the display and have been able to burn cds to retrieve some data for the new ibook I've already purchased.

Thanks in advance!

The inverter cable itself is about $12. The thing is that Apple is charging a lot to fix it...

Mine did that and it turned out the reed switch cable was bad. Someone posted a couple of weeks ago that he was quoted a price of about $110 to replace a reed switch (and cable).

You can buy a reed switch yourself from Smalldog for $20, if you're brave enough to try and replace it yourself. Check the above thread for details.

You can find it for $20 at Smalldog (it used to be $12 if I remember correctly, this is the price I paid mine) :
