tryed popping in a cd to burn today and realized that my optical drive is broken or something. when i slide in a cd...it usually accepts it when 30% of the cd has been pushed in...but now the cd goes in about 50% and thats it....wont go in, feels as if the slot cant accept it (like theres something in the way). i tried ejecting...and i know for a fact that there is no cd or dvd in there, anything i could before i make that dreaded call to applecare...I DONT WANNA BE POWERBOOKLESS FOR A WEEK!!!!
and also whats the best way to copy over everything to my lacie external (usb 2.0 only) drive?

Well, when my PBs have gone in, it's only taken 3 days total, including shipping. It's really fast.

I has that problem during my horrible repair experience with my 12" PB. There, it turned out the so-called 'technician' had left a loose screw inside the drive which obstructed the slit. They had to open the thing again and reassemble the CD drive.
You didn't happen to fiddle around with your PB's internals lately?

The result of all the problems is that slot loaders are less robust than tray loading drives.
I had a optical drive problem with my Ti500 and had to replace the drive. The replacement broke down a few months later with the same problem.
Your problem sounds like the button that has to be pushed inside to invoke the motor that sucks in the cd is broken, or the motor, or simply a wire etc. Sounds as if a talented tinkerer could fix it. But from your former posts I guess you are not comfortable opening the powerbook yourself (?).
I guess apple wants 400 €/$ for the drive repair. It will be cheaper to buy a new one from a third party (or a very fast external DVD burner).
Backup the data to an external drive? Don't you know Carbon Copy Cloner?

no need to pay apple for the repair...i still got applecare on it (knew that was gonna come in handy one of these days!!!)
dont really wanna tinker with my only toy...so i guess this suckers goin in today.
and for some reason...CCC wont copy onto my external, i thought it was because my external is strictly usb 2.0 but im not sure anymore? regardless... i used sync to copy over my home directory and applications folder, too bad my replacement comp whille its gone is a puny 450 cube, i had some ram layin round so atleast its up to 1.12gb of RAM but this is gonna be painful. i hope tooki's right.
