I bought a dead g3 at asurplus auction and i am trying to get it to work. WHen i turn the computer on all i get is the sign and then the question mark. I thought that this was a dead hard drive so i put a new one in it. When this did not work i thought maybe the cd was bad because it sounded kind of week but i replaced it with a used one and still nothing. I am wondering if it is the board. I have good battery and charger, but i get no led lights when i turn the computer on. I know that the harddrive is good but it is not wiped and is out of a dell. Do i need to format it? I have OS X and have tried for a while now, i just want to make sure that if if buy a new board it will fix it. Any advise is helpful.

Thanks,

Andy

Put in your Mac OS X install CD, and boot up the computer holding down "C." If it'll boot, try erasing the drive and installing Mac OS X.

Make sure you're not putting a DVD into a cd-rom drive. It won't work.
That Dell drive will need to be formatted for HFS once you get booted into the installer.
