I'd at least be sure to have the hard drive set to sleep when idle. The tech notes on most laptop hard disks do mention that they are not intended to be run 24/7. Also, you do have the screen set to sleep? - just that the backlight is the one component that is degrading from the moment it's first used, so I'd think you want to maximize it's potential life span.
If you have the screen and disk set to sleep, and processor speed set to automatic (and assuming the laptop is in a well ventilated area), I wouldn't think it should get overly warm, even with background tasks crunching. Even so, every Mac machine for years now has pretty sophisticated thermal overload/shutdown protection, so it cannot literally overheat.
