Hi,

I've been using a friend's titanium powerbook for a little while (he's out of town), and I am so impressed by it. And I've had almost every model of it at one point.

He's selling it, and I'm actually thinking of picking it up since it's not that much.

I don't know if he had it serviced by apple, but it really seems much better than any of the earlier titanium models that I have had.

First this one looks almost new, so I'm thinking it may have been serviced by apple, because of the age. The screen is so bright and clear and even though the resolution may not be as good as the newer 15", it is nice. But the color is impeccable.

I've been using it on the top of my sofa and on my lap plugged in over the last 40 minutes, and it's not even that warm. The other titaniums weren't warm, they would get darn right HOT. So what is up with this?

And finally, the airport range on this is pretty good also. Where I wasn't getting any reception before, this one actually picks up signals quite well.

So is that possible? That apple could have done this and improved on some of the major flaws of the 1st titanium? Are could this just be a lucky one. Either way, I must say I'm pretty impressed with what this old machine is doing, and how good it looks.

Did any of you have apple service on your old titanium and found that it came back better than the original?

Thanks!

I've had a few friends which suffered the hell of owning early-mid TiBooks, and besides paint peeling- they had the much worse issue of corrosion of/under the wrist area more so than the slot drive area warping. From those friends experiences, if the casing suffered both severe paint peel and corrosion, Apple replaced the casing including the screen since it resulted in a faster turn around... I believe the lid must of had lots o' missing paint for such a thing to be done, it'll be very costly for every machine being nearly rebuilt to that extreme. On the other hand every computer maker has insurance policies/slush funds for product disasters and Apple may have cashed in on it.

Unless your TiBook had a bad/loose Airport antenna, I don't think Apple could have improved range as by the time the extended repair program kicked in they reved up switching to AluPB design. If any modifications happened, its possible Apple resolved Airport antenna wiring and various under the hood problems. Can't comment about heat output of TiBooks, every laptop differs a bit and energy saver prefs make a difference too. I've had classmates complain or prove his/her 1Ghz first gen alu 15" is el scorching compared to mine which is only 250mhz faster or minime 12"(1.33Ghz)... it boggles the mind when you encounter such laptops. Apple may factor in 10-15 degree +/- headroom on all laptop designs and your friend's TiBook is just lucky. For all you know, maybe he *gasp* rarely used the 'book for mobility...

Hope that helps

I wish I had a warranty on mine. The part above the optical drive is crushed inwards a little bit. It's kinda scary really.

Yes, the Titanium PowerBooks are awsome machines, still. I had an 500 MHz model myself, and I loved it. But the 400/500 MHz models were the 1st revision, the 2nd were the 550/667 MHz models. So it is the 1st Titanium...

Hi,

It's just that I had them before and they were BAD. they would get so hot, and there was no reason to have an airport card in there because the reception was so bad.

this one is not hot at all, and the reception on this is actually impressive, like my pismo.

Does tiger have anything to do with it?

I had a TiBook 550mhz go in to Apple for a screen replacement last year and had a couple of surprises I wasn't expecting when I got it back. First, it originally had paint chipping off the front bezel badly and when I got it back Apple had replaced it so the unit itself looked brand new. Second, and I have no I idea why they did it since it wasn't why I sent it in but I'm not complaining, they replaced my internal dvd drive with a dvd/cd-rw. I was shocked to see I now had an internal cd burner. Its like my unit got a new lease on life.

I really didn't notice any changes performancewise after getting it back. Tiger runs a little warmer to me than Panther did, but the fan still takes awhile to kick on which is a huge improvement over Jaguar. Whats helped since then is upgrading to a 5400 rpm hdd and doubling the memory to 512mb. Airport reception is still mediocre although I found a trick to improving it a little by taking out the battery and pressing slowely along the side edge which is where the antenna runs.
