I'm ready to upgrade to a new 12" iBook (from my 600mhz G3). On the online Apple store, it looks like one of the best deals is customizing it by paying $100 more for a HD that has twice the storage of the "stock" (40GB) one. Is there any way I can get the larger HD iBook without ordering it direct from Apple? There's an independent (authorized) Mac retailer in my small town, that I'd like to give my business to but I'm guessing that they'd only sell this iBook with the 40GB drive. Does the warrenty get voided if I have an authorized Apple service provider change out the HD for me?

i think authorized apple dealers can order any type computer from apple to have sent to them for purchase, call me crazy but i cant see why thats not the case...it'll take just as long as ordering online by yourself...but if u really wanna give somebody your buisness, well then there ya go. also realize that if you get a BTO ibook (meaning you added more then the norm) and something is wrong with it...apple will not return without a processing fee of some sort, so be cautious with that. id go with the regular ibook, then replace the HD with 100gb 5400 drive aftermarket and let that authorized dealer do the installation for ya, but thats just me.
NOW YOU SEE ME! 2.4 MBP and 2.0 MBP (running ubuntu)

Check with the store and see the time lag if you order a larger hard drive iBook model from them. Pay a deposit and see if they can get the model you want quickly enough for you,

Makes no sense to buy a new iBook then swop out the hard drive. You could do that with the one you already have.

I talked to the guy and he said that the only HDs that don't void the warranty are the ones that Apple offers in the stock and BTO configurations. So I had him order the 12" iBook with the 80GB option. Does Apple apply the "processing fee" even on repairs under warranty and/or Applecare?
