NB: It doesn't "log you off", it goes to sleep.

AFAIK, that can't be done.

HOWEVER, you CAN use the 'book with the lid closed, it's called "clamshell mode". You need an external keyboard and/or mouse for that, though, and it's probably not what you're looking for.

What's the purpose of having the "connections alive" ? do you have a wireless internet connection available at any time when you go to work?

Dakkon: Since you're not in the house, what difference does it matter whether the lid is open or closed? Just leave the lid open and let the screensaver run.

Albook: How could you possibly fit an open laptop in a backpack?

It is. But Albook admonished us not to put it into a backpack while it is awake, and the only way it can be awake with the lid closed is if an external keyboard, mouse, and display are attached. Since it is unlikely that anyone would want to put all of those into a backpack together, I assumed he meant not to put the Powerbook into a backpack with the lid open.

If you check the Sleepless link that Albook posted you would realise that it overrides the "when lid closes, sleep the laptop" function of the laptop. Normally, you would require a keyboard/mouse/display to work it in clamshell mode, but Sleepless overrides that requirement (for whatever reason). However, since the laptop now does not sleep when you close the lid, it is possible to damage the laptop's HDD or through thermal overload if you leave it running in an enclosed/moving location such as a backpack (and having mistakenly forgotten to make it go to sleep).

Dakkon, why don't you instead go to System Prefs -> Security and Require a Password to wake the computer from screensaver and then set Expose to run the screensaver when you put your cursor in the top-right corner (or wherever) and wait for the display to shut off- or adjust your brightness to zero- and rely on that for some security? That's what I have running, and I have had no problems.
