FireWire400 Problem with PB

Nothing will mount through the Firewire 400 port on my PB 15" 1.67 GHz. I've tried a number of different drives and my iPod but nothing will mount. It will charge my iPod and my bus powered external HD gets enough juice, but won't mount. I also have an external FW 800 drive and that mounts and performs fine.

I can get FW400 devices to mount by daisy-chaining through the FW800 drive, but they perform poorly, so it's not simply the port. I can't copy large files without errors and then usually the drive dismounts by itself, giving me the warning that I disconnected the device incorrectly.

I ran TechTool Pro and tested FireWire. When a drive was connected to the 400 port it said "unavailable." But when nothing was connected it passed all tests.

I've booted off a CD and I get the same results: FW800 OK but no FW400 drives mounting.

Any ideas?

Are your firewire drives bus-powered or do they have their own power supply?
maybe you've been brainwashed too.

I hate to say it, but I think your FW400 port could be toast. If it does provide power to devices like the iPod for charging, but won't mount, there's something wrong with the data lines to the port. It's unusual that the data would fail and not the power because it's easier to see how a FW device could cause the FW power fuse inside the machine to blow. The data lines could be shorted somehow. Take it to an Apple store for diagnosis by a genius, but I think it's gone.

As I mentioned, I'm having FW400 problems even when they are plugged into the back of my FW800 drive, which is working fine. So it's not just the one port. I have both a bus powered and a powered 400 drive and they all work fine on my wife's ibook. Is there any hardware apart from the ports that FW400 is dependent on?

No. I guess I don't understand the extent of the problems you have putting these devices on the FW800 port. You say they perform poorly. What does that mean? Just really slow copying? That fact that the devices mount on the FW800 and not the FW400 points to a problem with just the FW400 port in question.
