I'm having problems with my Powerbook LCD. The backlight has recently shot craps...with no warning. When I boot-up, I can very faintly see the desktop. Functionally everything is running smoothly, except for the LCD backlight. After doing a lot of research on this issue, I have found several "suggestions" for fixing the problem. To be honest, I am now more confused than ever, and need some help from you guys. From what I can tell, here are my options:

1. Replace entire LCD screen
2. Try to replace the backlight
3. Replace the inverter board
4. Replace the reed switch cable

HELP! I have no idea which of these to try. How do I know which of these is causing the issue. Any help on this topic would be greatly appreciated...

In theory, you shouldn't try any of these. They are all tricky replacements. Number 4 doesn't make sense. The reed switch tells the machine when it is closed for going to sleep. The "easiest" replacement here is the inverter board located in the hinge. You only have to take off the top case cover (2 torq screws) and the board itself (1 screw). But it's not easy to get that cover off. But you could also have blown the fuse on the main logic board, which is even harder to do. Take it to an Apple store and have them work on it. To see how hard these replacements are, see the guides at http://www.pbfixit.com.
