Yesterday I got a G4 PowerBook and have found a curious problem.

MS Word documents will not open from desktop UNLESS the MS Word program is already open.

If MS Word is not open, I get a message which reads:

"The operation could not be completed. An unexpected error occurred (error code - 10660)."

This is annoying because I have to open the program, then close the Blank that automatically opens, and only then can the saved file can be opened from desktop.

I have fiddled with the MS Word preferences, in particular "File Location" (set to desktop) but this does not help.

AppleWorks files (transferred from my old G3 ibook) open fine whether or not Appleworks is already open.

I have never used MS Word on a Mac before. Is this usual? Should I be able to simply click open an MS Word doc and have the program open automatically?

First, this has absolutely nothing to do with Powerbooks. It should be asked in a different forum.

Other than that, do a Get Info on the file to make sure it is a proper Word file that will be opened by Word. Then try repairing permissions using Disk Utility found in the Utilities folder found in the Applications folder. If you've just installed Word, it's possible that the permissions on your files are not set correctly.

Not a PowerBook question. This belongs in Applications.
