What happens when a powerbook overheats?

Does it just shut itself down?

If so, for how long (how's it determined)?

always been curious.

sometimes i hear my powerbook's fan kick in when the ventilation isn't optimal, and I wonder what would happen if it kept chuggin' away .....

The machine goes to sleep. If it is still too hot when you try to wake it up, it won't wake up or it will briefly wake up and then go back to sleep.

Correct. The Powerbook generates virtually no heat when it is asleep, so in terms of quickly cooling it, sleep is just as effective as shutting it down. And it has the added side benefit of not losing any unsaved data.

once this summer, my powerbook (12" revC alu) got REALLY hot: scary, fans were on full,
but i needed to keep working.
then, without warning it...shut down. click!

put it in front of the AC for 15 minutes, rebooted.

now have a fan blowing under the pb!
