My girlfriend just got a new powerbook from CompUSA. When I took a look at it I noticed that the extra memory CompUSA gave them was the wrong kind and instead of showing up as 512mbs was showing up as 256mb. What kinda damage can this do to the computer? Cause we have had them replace the memory, but know the computer is crashing all the time and there is something wrong with the Lower Slot memory (which should be the memory from apple and not the new one)

Basically I am wanting to know if this could have done any real damage to the computer. My gf's mom is wanting them to replace the whole system.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Bring it back to the store and ask to talk to a manager.

I'd pull the memory andsee if its still crashing. Since it fit in there, the memory type is basically in the same family so it should have the same pinouts and thus not cause a major problem, I'm not sure,so if you pull and run the Apple Hardware Test CD you can be sure.

In one sense I'm with your gf's mom, why take chance when it was their screw up. Overall if it passes the AHT then you should be ok.

I had already done the AHT and it did fail. That is how I knew it was an issue with the lower slot. And not the higher one which should be the one that the ram compusa installed should be.

is the powerbook in question a 15" by any chance?

I would think it's the lower ram slot that has failed rather than the memory.
The logic board will be replaced by Apple free of charge, under warrenty.

If it failed then its a no brainer - take it back to compusa and get a replacement. Its their screw up why should you suffer or have to deal with getting it repaired.
