Ok I have a first Generation 15" Al powerbook. when I use the trackpad it will start to behave erratically then it will stop completely. If I close the lid and sleep it then reopen it the trackpad works again. External mice work fine. Is there anything i can do to fix this besides get the top assembly replaced?
Thanks!

Have you tried System Preference / Keyboard & Mouse / Trackpad Options / Ignore accidental trackpad input ? Or you have sweaty palm?

Try placing your hand, palm down, over the entire trackpad. Then lift it straight off. That sometimes fixes problems like yours.
